Septarian spheres are formed from ancient, mineral-rich mud balls that dried and cracked, creating unique patterns filled with yellow calcite, brown aragonite, and gray limestone. Origins of Septarian Spheres:
 
Septarian nodules, often called "Dragon Stones" due to their scale-like appearance, formed during the Cretaceous period, around 50 to 70 million years ago. The formation process is believed to be: 
 
Sedimentation During a time when sea levels were high, volcanic activity and the decomposition of marine life led to the accumulation of organic-rich mud on the ocean floor, which formed into rounded masses or "mud balls."
Dehydration and Cracking As the oceans receded and the mud balls dried out, they shrank and developed a distinctive internal network of angular cracks, known as "septaria" (from the Latin word septum, meaning partition or enclosure).
Mineral Infilling Groundwater rich in minerals seeped into these cracks. Yellow calcite and brown aragonite crystallized within the fissures, while the outer rock remained as gray limestone.
